Flax seeds are one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. They are a great source of micronutrients, dietary fiber, manganese, vitamin B1, and the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid, also known as ALA or Omega-3. They are a valuable addition to smoothies, cereal, baked goods and energy balls. Because they are gluten free, they are also a widely used and useful ingredient in GF cooking, and are also often used to replace eggs in vegan baking.

Flaxseeds are very high in fibre, omega 3, and lingnans (in fact, flaxseeds have the highest source of these unique fiber-related polyphenol antioxidants available in human diets),  as well as many other healthful vitamins and minerals:

A 1 ounce (3 tbsp) serving of flaxseeds contains:
• Omega-3 (ALA) 6,338mg
• Fiber 8g
• Protein 6g
• Vitamin B1 31% RDA
• Manganese 35% RDA
• Magnesium 30% RDA
• Phosphorus 19% RDA
• Selenium 10% RDA
• Also, flaxseeds contain vitamin B6, iron, potassium, copper and zinc.

The lingnans in flax seeds have been found help to clear toxins from the body, are anti-aging and improve cellular health. They also support probiotics in the body – reducing candida and yeast growth, and have been found to be anti-cancer.  Additionally, lignans are also known for their anti-viral and antibacterial properties, helping to stave off colds and flu. They also help to balance hormones, and may help to prevent and decrease certain types of hormone related cancer.

Evidence shows they may help reduce your risk of heart disease, strokes, and diabetes. Flax seeds also give you clear skin and healthy hair, because of the ALA fats, which also help to fight acne, eczema and rosacea, and may help to reduce inflammation.   Additionally, they help to lower cholesterol, reduce sugar cravings, improve digestion, and promote weight loss, especially as part of a well balanced diet.

Because of their hard outer shell, flax seeds need to be either ground or soaked in order for the body to be able to absorb them properly. Luckily, they taste great added ground to a whole range of foods!
